Effective January 1, 2019, the credentialing body that administers the Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA) credential changed from CCI to the National Assistant at Surgery Certification (NASC).

This RNFA program is an expanded practice course for operating room nurses, nurse midwives and nurse practitioners. This list is compiled by the RNFA Program Verification Committee (Karen Knapp (Chairman), Sheila Allen, Nancy Appling, and Jean Franks), and is subject to change without notice. These programs are in compliance with AORN recommendations for RNFA programs. APRNs include Nurse Practitioners (NP), Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS), Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA), and Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM). The following RNFA programs have met specific criteria and are acceptable programs for CRNFA or RNAS-C eligibility. Note: An APRN (Advanced Practice Registered Nurse) is an RN who has earned a graduate-level degree such as a Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN) or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).

An RN must be CNOR-eligible to enroll in an RNFA program, and must earn CNOR before graduation. The RN First Assistant (RNFA) Program consists of 52 hours of lecture and laboratory plus a required independent preceptorship.An APRN can enter RNFA training with no perioperative experience.To see a list of acceptable RNFA programs, click here.
